Gracie's Spotlight Dogs for November 2011: A Special Story

We just recently got back from vacationing in St. Maarten. While we were there, exploring the beautiful island for a week, we encountered numerous stray dogs roaming around the busy roads and gorgeous beaches.

I thought it would be great to spotlight some of the dogs on the island of St. Maarten this November and talk about the animal foundation on the island.

With the weather being so hot and humid all day I found it amazing that all the stray dogs were so resilient and it seemed they all had their own routine which they repeated daily.

We took some pictures of some of the stray dogs we saw throughout the week. They were all very cute!

We did learn that St. Maarten is making an effort to care for stray animals and to educate the community on the proper care of animals. Many of the people on the island are actually very fond of their own pets. There are plenty of pet friendly outdoor bars and restaurants. 

The St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation was founded in 1992 to address the problem of homeless and neglected animals on the island. To encourage responsible pet ownership, the Foundation holds several public activities each year: Annual Dog Show, DogWalks, Dog Washes. These activities celebrate the pleasure dog owners receive from pet ownership. 

 

An example of one of the pet friendly places was Loterie Farm Tree Lounge. There was a very cute pup hanging out.

We had a great time in St. Maarten but we really missed our girl. Gracie had a rough time without us, but we've made sure she's received a bunch of hugs and kisses since we've been back!

Hintonburg’s Global Pet Foods is having a “Howloween Party” as well as a Customer Appreciation event on October 30^th.

As their way of celebrating, they will have a Halloween costume contest, trick or trick bags, tax free shopping and lots of freebies.

To top it all off, there will be a professional pet photographer who will be taking Halloween studio pictures to raise funds for Ottawa Humane Society.

Gracie's Missing Dog Alert: Female Chocolate Lab Lost in Dartmouth, MA

Gracie is reaching out to all her friends in the Southcoast and hoping everyone can pass this information along.

Picked up by Animal Control on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:30 a.m.

We were contacting by a fellow dog owner in Dartmouth, MA today about a friendly female chocolate lab he found while walking his pups:

"I was walking my two black lab this morning around the Dartmouth water reservoirs and found a friendly female chocolate lab who was taking a stroll on her own and decided to join our pack all the way up to Old Westport Road entrance.  I could not locate the owner and she had no collar.  I tried to turn her away several time without success, she was having a great time and so did my dogs.  In the end, I could not leave her on Old Westport Rd so I called Dartmouth animal control while she rested with her new friends in my truck."

Meet Gracie's Spotlight Dog for October 2011

Our close friends Erin and Michael from Derry New Hampshire contacted us to share their new addition to their family. His name is Buddy and he is very handsome!

"Buddy is an adorable shepherd/retriever/husky mix.  He is about 75 lbs and sweet as can be.  He loves to play and cuddle (yes, on your lap...all 75 lbs).  Even though he is a big boy, he is a BIG baby.  He is a very loving boy, who doesn't like to leave your side.

Here's some history on Buddy that I got from the woman that rescued him:
 
She took Buddy's mom and her sister, both were pregnant, from a very high kill shelter in the south. They gave birth a week apart. His aunty had 11 babies and his mom had 9! Both girls came to us so underweight that the vets said they had another 3 weeks before delivery! wrong! Aunty gave birth the night she arrived and her sister gave birth 1 week later!  Buddy was born on May 18th 2010.  He was adopted by a family when he was 8 weeks old, but at 1 year and 4 months, they could no longer care for him due to scheduling conflicts.  

Buddy's Breed Mix:

We can only go off what mom and her sister were and what we see in the pups because daddy was a traveling salesman! Unfortunately spay and neuter is non-existent in the south so these girls were impregnated by the same male dog....we suspect that to be the case anyways. 

Both mom and her sister had labby personalities. Mom was the golden color with the white stripe, while her sister was chocolate lab brown with caramel markings. Similar to a doberman. They both had long bodies and weighed about 70 lbs filled out.

 

Gisella, his aunty, she had 11 pups.....3 had husky markings...no blue eyes though. So between mom and her sister I pulled out lab, shepherd, husky, and pointer because his mommy had the white stripe and white paws.

 

Between both litters we predominantly saw the shepherd markings, long hair, lab looks, with some husky and shepherd thrown in there. Every baby in their litters was very different! No two looked the same. It just goes to show how many potential breeds run in their history. Moms are both mutts and I'm sure daddy was too. Made for some adorable babies though!"  ~Erin

Gracie had a chance to meet Buddy this past weekend and she loves him!
