Rock On, Rock On! Gracie's Best Kept Secret at Gooseberry Island

As Gracie and I were enjoying our favorite pet friendly place (Gooseberry Island) the other day, we came across one of Gooseberry's best kept secrets, the beautiful art of rock balancing! We walk at Gooseberry Island a couple of times per week. It's only on a rare and special occasion we encounter these beautiful rock creations. We've written about them once before (Rock Balancing). It's by pure chance when we get to experience this beautiful work of art. Gooseberry Island really is a pet friendly hidden gem!

We even ran into a beautiful sand castle the very same day. Our beach walk was quite a treat!!

Gracie wanted to share some swimming photos too. She loves her evening summer swims over at Gooseberry.

We also want to let you all know that seaweed has taken over the island recently. It's probably best to wait until September to head over for an adventure with your pup. The fall season is our favorite! The island is absolutely beautiful and refreshing during autumn.

Story about a beautiful and loving pit bull named Dante

Jeannine contact Gracie's Bark for help with a pit bull named Dante. We recommended that Jeannine contact her local animal shelter and the MSPCA to find out if they know of any Pit Bull rescues in New England who she can contact. We also did some research online and found PittieLoveRescue.org.

"This is a long sad story about a beautiful and loving gray and tan Pit Bull named Dante. 

My nephew picked him up from somewhere unknown as a pup.  At the time, my 18 year old nephew was bouncing around between homes, his mom's, his dad's, his grandparents, his friends (he doesn't like to follow rules.)  Dante ended up living with my brother which was the best place for him at the time.  A year later my brother met someone and moved from Massachusetts to S. Carolina and took Dante with him.  Dante had a sweet life for a couple of years; a large fenced in yard with a built in swimming pool (he loves to swim) and two playmates.  One of the other dogs was a chihuahua mix named Baby with whom Dante played a little rough too many times, so my brother's new wife gave him an ultimatum, either Dante goes or they both can go.  So Dante was driven back to Massachusetts and dumped at my elderly, non pet loving parents' home (much to their surprise.)   

It has been a year that Dante has been living there.  He is confused and lonely and we've experienced some negative behavior issues. 

Now you may ask, why don't I take him?  My husband & I have two cocker spaniels, one who is elderly, and a cat.  They do not like large dogs and we would be a little afraid of Dante being too rough with them.  My sister has a husky and doesn't feel she can handle Dante also. 

We have placed posters of Dante in several veterinarian offices over the past several months.  My nephew, who can not have dogs in his apartment and has a baby now, has been trying to find a home for him.  My husband and sister, who are letter carriers, have been asking their customers if they know anyone who would want him, but we have had no interested parties.

My mother is at her wits end and recently procured a phone number to call to have Dante taken away and is threatening to call.  I don't know who this number is for, but if it is for animal control, Dante is doomed.  Can you help us place Dante in a loving home?  Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated."

Tribute to Indy, an amazing Siberian Husky who touched the hearts of many people

Sea Dog Festival in Hull Massachusetts

We were invited by the Sea Dog in Hull to their annual Sea Dog Festival this past Sunday. People and puppies alike were invited to Sea Dog Hull’s picturesque waterfront location on Sunset Bay Marina for a day of everything dog.

We stopped by the festival after our adventure to World's End Reservation. Everyone was very friendly and nice, but you were not able to eat anything if you had our dog with you. We were very disappointed and left very hungry. We would highly recommend that the Sea Dog in Hull make a plan next year to be able to serve people outdoors with their dogs and/or advertise it properly. There was an outdoor patio, but dogs were not permitted. 

We did take some photos of some very adorable dogs.

Gracie's Pet Friendly Adventure to World's End Reservation

At World's End Reservation you will find rolling hills and rocky shorelines which offer sweeping views of the Boston skyline, while tree-lined carriage paths designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted make delightful walking trails. 

 

 

We decided to take Gracie on an adventure last weekend to this beautiful dog friendly park located in Hingham Massachusetts. We roamed around World's End for about two hours and loved every minute of it. We are planning to go back because we did not get to finish exploring the entire park.

There is a cost per person to enter the park which is $5, but we didn't mind at all. The park is beautiful and the views are amazing.

We created a short video of all the photos we took at World's End Reservation too!

Sea Dog Fest Howls into Hull Massachusetts

There's a new meaning to the Dog Days of Summer!

Sea Dog Hull Hosts a Fun Filled Day of food, Music, Beer and Everything Dog

Soak up the summer sun with man’s two best friends: beer and dogs, at Sea Dog Hull’s inaugural Sea Dog Fest on Sunday, July 10, 2011.

 
People and puppies alike are invited to Sea Dog Hull’s picturesque waterfront location on Sunset Bay Marina for a day of eating, drinking and everything dog.

Gracie has already scheduled a play date with her best friend Cali from Derry New Hampshire to meet at the Sea Dog Fest! We are very excited to embark on this pet friendly adventure on Sunday.
 
In addition to the award winning micro-brews, outstanding local seafood and breathtaking Boston Harbor and city sky-line views, Sea Dog Brew Pub wants your furry friends to get in on the action. On site will be contests such as dog/owner look-a-like contest, a “Pup Corner” for the kids and vendors that are everything dog.
 
Live entertainment will be provided by Zimbabwe based percussion group; Bongo Love. To accompany the mellow mood of the drums will be a kid’s tent for the younger crowd, beer garden for the older crowd and enough burgers, hot dogs and seafood for all with a little left over for the canines in attendance.

In Honor of Elliott, the 21 year old Jack Russell Terrier

March 9, 1990 - April 25, 2011

We have had the pleasure of connecting with Andy Clark from New Bedford Massachusetts, just one town over from us. Andy has a story to tell about his long time companion Elliott. We were honored to have the opportunity to share Elliott's story on Gracie's Bark. We encourage everyone to read this heart felt story and to help Andy share his wonderful memories of Elliott. Elliott touched the lives of many during his 21 year journey. Thank you Andy for sharing Elliott with us.

"The story is that on "good friday" my wife and I had a appointment with the doctors,to find out the sex our first baby.We returned home and I left for work to return later in the evening. Saturday morning my wife said to me" Elliott dosen't seem to be hungry and just laying around" and off to work I went. Easter morning we spent the whole day with him and he would not eat and felt very skinny. I tried all day not to think about his condition until I was going to bed late Sunday night. My toughts were he doesnt look good I sat on the floor and said " I love you sooooo much Elliott, Your the best doggie ever" As tears and my jaw started to quiver. There was no way I was going to bed with out saying something in case he didn't make it. When I got into bed collecting my toughts,I broke down! My wife rolled over held my hand and I told her how much I felt Elliotts pain. First time I ever went to sleep crying. Monday morning April 25th my wife called the vet we could no get a appointment til 3:30 in the afternoon.We where in the living room with him all day,even Rexx our cat laid next to him in the bed. Elliott was so frail I even carried him and held him in the waiting room. Dr.Ramsey our vet looked at him and said "oh Elliott" Blood work was done and his heart and lungs were fine,but his weight was low and his cell counts were not good. It was a matter of time before his system shut down. We had 3 options, hospitalize him for a blood transfusion and extended care,take him home to wait or say good bye.This was the hardest day of my life.I have know my wife for 16 years and never seen her cry until that day. Her quote looking at me huigging Elliott for the last time " Andy I feel so bad for him,he's got tears in his eyes" I kew I was not going home with my buddy. I told my wife to leave the room so I could say what i wanted one last time. Now it's myself and the only dog I ever had, I broke down held on to Elliott for the last time on the table with a heated blanket. I cried so loud and said "you will always be with me where ever i go" Elliott made eye contact with me for the last time as I rubbed his head for the last time. My hand rolled across his face til I got to the end of his ear leaving the room tears pouring down my face as I left the vet. When we returned home I grabbed Elliott''s leash and told my wife Let's walk the neighborhood for Elliott. We talked about all the funny stories we could think of. I love you Elliott "

Meet Fenway! Gracie's July 2011 Spotlight Dog

Tammy Roche and family contacted Gracie's Bark to share their story about Fenway. Gracie was delighted to spotlight Fenway this month!

"Here is our Fenway.  We just adopted him in December when he turned 2.  He was brought to the vet to be put down because he has so many allergies which is very costly to find out exactly what he is allergic to and to treat it all.  In addition to the numerous allergies, he also has a thyroid condition.

So we decided to take Fenway and after a few weeks I was at my wits end trying to figure out what he was allergic to.  I ended up taking him for the test and the poor thing is allergic to BEEF, can you imagine a dog allergic to beef along with dairy, venison, mosquitoes, moths, wool, ragweed and the list goes on.  The saddest thing is that he LOVES tennis balls but is allergic to rubber.  He would play with his tennis ball all day and catch it and bring it back to you but by the end of the day he would have a swollen, red muzzle.  I have been able to manage his allergies pretty well but haven’t been able to find what I can replace the tennis ball with.  Fenway is an absolute joy and couldn’t image life without him under bite and all."
