Meet Sadie & Lucy Our Spotlight Dogs for February 2012

Cristina contacted Gracie's Bark to spotlight her two adorable Bouvier des Flandres dogs named Sadie and Lucy.

"Sadie's our youngest and turned 2 in November. We started professional training again recently to work on some problem behavior as she is quite a handful; true to the Bouvier des Flandres breed. She is a sweetheart too and loves to snuggle. She weighs about 76 pounds and thinks she's a lap dog. Her favorite crazy behavior is jumping up and barking at the bird feeder. We even have a YouTube video of it, see below."

 

"Lucy is 10 years old. She is a saint for putting up with her crazy sister Sadie. She is so different from Sadie in every respect. Quiet, mellow and submissive (most of time), except for when we're out on our off-leash walks. She gives Sadie a run for her money then!"

Ring in the New Year with Gracie's January 2012 Spotlight Dog

Bea contacted Gracie's Bark to spotlight her handsome dog Brady. We had a chance to meet Bea and Brady at the Santa Photo event this past December at Manypaws Pet Villa. 

"Three years ago we went to the Brockton Blue Dog Shelter knowing exactly what we wanted: a calm, fully trained mature dog. We had even picked out the right dog for us on line. But another family got that dog first, and the wily Blue Dog Shelter people sat us down and unleashed a wriggly, frantic, tummy-exposing, face-licking 3-month-old puppy. Needless to say...we adopted Brady. 

Brady is a Lab mix, part of a litter rescued from somewhere in Tennessee. He came (luckily) crate-trained, and guaranteed to tolerate our two cats. He did, especially after the top cat swiped him across the snout. As Brady grew, his "mix" seemed to be part terrier, part greyhound (he runs like the wind), maybe part Rhodesian Ridgeback.

We enrolled him in puppy kindergarten, where he ate his diploma. Then another obedience class, but he still had a hard time staying off the sofa. The solution? A classy, cushy dog bed in the living room. 

Bob walked Brady twice a day (and still does): at Slocum River Reserve, at Westport Town Farm, at Gooseberry Island, but Brady still has energy left over. So twice a week he goes to Manypaws Pet Villa, where he loves his big dogs play group.

Brady took a 3rd obedience class, from Marcia Albert and Bob and I became very obedient. We're still learning. This fall we took Brady on a trip for the first time, staying at a dog-friendly B&B. Big success! We'll do that again. 

Who knows how the "right dog" we had in mind three years ago would have turned out? At three years +, Brady is a reasonably calm, reasonably trained, mature dog who still does tummy rubs and face licks, a great companion on long rambles, a handsome and funny guy. Bob and I are lucky dogs that Brady chose us." ~Bea

Meet Gracie's Spotlight Dog for October 2011

Our close friends Erin and Michael from Derry New Hampshire contacted us to share their new addition to their family. His name is Buddy and he is very handsome!

"Buddy is an adorable shepherd/retriever/husky mix.  He is about 75 lbs and sweet as can be.  He loves to play and cuddle (yes, on your lap...all 75 lbs).  Even though he is a big boy, he is a BIG baby.  He is a very loving boy, who doesn't like to leave your side.

Here's some history on Buddy that I got from the woman that rescued him:
 
She took Buddy's mom and her sister, both were pregnant, from a very high kill shelter in the south. They gave birth a week apart. His aunty had 11 babies and his mom had 9! Both girls came to us so underweight that the vets said they had another 3 weeks before delivery! wrong! Aunty gave birth the night she arrived and her sister gave birth 1 week later!  Buddy was born on May 18th 2010.  He was adopted by a family when he was 8 weeks old, but at 1 year and 4 months, they could no longer care for him due to scheduling conflicts.  

Buddy's Breed Mix:

We can only go off what mom and her sister were and what we see in the pups because daddy was a traveling salesman! Unfortunately spay and neuter is non-existent in the south so these girls were impregnated by the same male dog....we suspect that to be the case anyways. 

Both mom and her sister had labby personalities. Mom was the golden color with the white stripe, while her sister was chocolate lab brown with caramel markings. Similar to a doberman. They both had long bodies and weighed about 70 lbs filled out.

 

Gisella, his aunty, she had 11 pups.....3 had husky markings...no blue eyes though. So between mom and her sister I pulled out lab, shepherd, husky, and pointer because his mommy had the white stripe and white paws.

 

Between both litters we predominantly saw the shepherd markings, long hair, lab looks, with some husky and shepherd thrown in there. Every baby in their litters was very different! No two looked the same. It just goes to show how many potential breeds run in their history. Moms are both mutts and I'm sure daddy was too. Made for some adorable babies though!"  ~Erin

Meet Gracie's Spotlight Dog for September 2011

Pete contacted Gracie's Bark to spotlight his adorable dog Zoey.

"Zoey is a 2 and a half year old Chihuahua Pug, or CHUG. I always wanted a Golden Retriever, but my wife said they were just too big. I saw Zoey and was hooked. She is a small dog who weighs just 15 lbs, but acts a lot bigger. She isn't afraid of much, doesn't get upset with T-storms, or loud equipment, etc. She's also far stronger than she looks, and is more than happy to follow along on a long hike or bike ride. She is just as content at laying next to you if you're not feeling active or are sick. She truly will do whatever I want to do at all times. She is my 3rd child. I take her almost everywhere with me. Her favorite activities are car rides, the beach, and chasing rabbits first thing in the morning. She sleeps like a ROCK right along my side every night, but she does snore loudly often. Her favorite toys are the non-filled squeakers because she destroys anything stuffed, and plastic water bottles. I'm sure I have missed a ton, but the bottom line is that she is my baby, and I'm so grateful to have her!"  ~Pete

Meet Snickers! Gracie's August 2011 Spotlight Dog

Beth contacted Gracie's Bark to share her story about Snickers. Gracie was delighted to spotlight Snickers this month!

"Meet Snickers, He is a rescue from Louisana. We adopted him in December of 2008 as a 14 week old puppy.  He was born to a chocolate lab momma, we aren't sure about the dad. His mom was found near some train tracks in Louisana very pregnant.  She was rescued by a lady who we call Grandma Jenny, she actually also runs and operates a Wild Cat Sanctuary called Yogi and Friends in Louisana.  Snickers loves going to doggie day care and playing with his doggie friends.  He is a wonderful dog who loves his people, other dogs and children and his cats.  He loves to go for rides, the snow, and the beach.  Snickers will celebrate his 3rd Birthday on September 20."  ~Beth
