The cocker spaniel that served as the subject of former president Richard Nixon's most famous speech was joined in later years by a poodle named Vicky. Checkers, alas, never made it to the White House, as she died in 1964, around the time that this photo was taken. After Nixon's election to the presidency, Vicky was joined by a terrier named Pasha and an Irish setter named King Timahoe.
Nicole: They sure are! When I was a child our neighbors had 2 spaniels and they were wonderful with kids. We loved to play with them.

I wouldn't be surprised why the president chose cocker spaniel. They are such sweet and lovable pets. And of course, for politicians, loyalty is really important, thus, having a spaniel is a good pick.
